I LOVE the expression of a colorful home. It tells me fun and loving people live here. People who are bold and unafraid. People who take chances and say what they mean.
I know. I put a lot of meaning into a colorful facade but it’s often correct. I even moved to San Francisco just to be surrounded by such homes and people. It was an amazing city to experience your 20’s. Too poor to eat fancy dinners or buy fancy clothes; it didn’t matter. Art and color and cheap amazing food was everywhere. Until it wasn’t. Until the dot com boom and bust, where everything was snatched up by Silicon Valley. All my artist friends had to leave their funky cheap lofts to make way for programmers. Friends moved on and so did I.
I now live back on the east coast but I still miss those colorful houses that promised a likely friend.
Inspired by my love of colorful homes, I recently created a whimsical houses painting that - if they were real homes - would hold the promise, delight, and warmth of a wild and bold friend. This and other original Tanglewood Sue (as in colorful!) paintings are available for sale through my online store.
Now me... I live in a non-colorful farmhouse, not an eclectic Victorian. BUT I’m repainting my home with wild color so folks know the type of people that live inside. So they know that they are welcome. Please come follow along on my #NOTFORRESALE Adventures where I am reinventing my home LIVE on my Tanglewood Sue Facebook page. Help me choose colors, keep my new garden alive, pick out shutters, or even watch me paint pour my driveway to look like a beach. Yes. I'm gonna do it and you don't want to miss!
Here's what I started with. See? Nothing "Tanglewood Sue" about it!
Even my front garden needs some help... and color.
It was so cool to use a mock-up program to plan out my colors. I'm also going to add embellishments like corbels on the porch posts, and shutters on the windows. I was inspired to get working!
These are the colors in my palette. Perfectly me.
Here's where I'm at on the project today. There's still work to do, but I'm loving it so far. There's even a fuchsia pink planter in the garden! So much promise, wouldn't you say? And so much more "Tanglewood Sue" then it was before!
Yes, I think it says that someone fun lives here ;-)
Taking the color inside... if you're looking for whimsy, eclectic, and fun art for your home, consider a Tanglewood Sue original. Head over to my online shop to see what I'm offering. New items are added as they're completed.
The colorful homes painting I'm showcasing in this blog post - titled "Someone Fun Lives Here" - is also available for sale through my online shop. I can already imagine it hanging in your home!

Congrats Sue, it looks so cheery and welcoming! Keep up the momentum. I’m calling it the pandemic effect, as I recently repainted my faded house and shed shutters… bright PURPLE… as well as the mailbox, welcome mat, and new house numbers. My neighbor across the street will smile; he’s a Baltimore Ravens fan!
