We all have clothes that we are no longer wearing for one reason or another. Trust me –I’ve been there. In fact, I’ve been there recently. In prepping to head out with friends, I pulled on one of my favorite sweaters only to find that it…um… didn’t fit? (Not sure how that happened!) In any case, I still needed to find something funky and fun to head out in for some winter fun. I racked my brain because I LOVED that sweater and didn’t want to say goodbye to it just yet.
Not only was I able to figure out a way to keep it, I found FOUR ways! That’s right. Your old sweater can be made into 4 upcycled, fashionable possibilities. Looking for a new infinity scarf but don’t want to spend big bucks? Need some boot toppers to go with your favorite boots? Lose a set of gloves? You’re in luck! Your old sweater can be turned into all three PLUS a great accessory to keep your cat (or dog!)’s ears warm. Oh, and did I mention that absolutely no sewing is required? That’s right. NO SEWING!
Interested in how this is done? Below I have outlined the 4 basic steps to getting your sweater ready for some upcycled fashion!
Find an old sweater
Before you head to Goodwill, sort through your sweaters and see if you can find any that can be salvaged.
Turn the sweater inside out.
This is an important step. You need to turn the sweater inside out, so that you can see the seams.
Cut off the sleeves.
Be careful to cut on the other side of the seam. What do I mean? Well, if you’re looking at the sweater lying on a table and you want to cut off the left sleeve, you’ll want to cut so that the seam remains on the sweater. For the left sleeve, this means that you will cut to the left of the seam.
Cut off the neck.
So, you’ll only want to cut off the neck if the sweater has one! If it’s a crew neck, you don’t need to do anything. If it’s a cowl neck, you’ll want to follow the same instructions as for the sleeves. Remember to leave the seam on the body of the sweater.
