“At 3am, on Saturday, May 20th, Richard Collins III, a black student from Bowie State University, was stabbed to death by a UMD student with known ties to a white supremacy organization. This recent atrocity on the campus of the University of Maryland has left us all shaken to our core. We cannot, as individuals and as a community, stand idly by and simply hope this never happens again. We must act.
Please consider remembering the life of Richard Collins III and show that hate has no place in our community by joining us at Tanglewood Works on July 21st, where 10% of purchases that mention the fundraiser will be donated to the Richard Collins III Memorial Fund at Bowie State University.
This event was organized by the Hyattsville Area Residents for Progress (HARP), which works to make our community strong, welcoming, and resilient. We are neighbors—of all races, classes, orientations, genders, and nationalities—who stand up to protect one another. Many of us are also UMD alumni, and employees, who feel a deep connection to the university and want to take a stand against hate. Together we are building a better world and a thriving, passionate democracy, in the face of rising bigotry and authoritarianism.
